Artist Statement Pencil was my first love, then probably ballpoint pen. Oil paint was so done by everyone for so long I would not touch it for 20 years just trying to be different. My first oil painting was of Mae in about 1982, it is a 5’ x 6’ portrait with giant rubrium lilies. Oils have such a life of their own, and if you have ever worked with them you know what I mean. You work all day until you are exhausted then wake up and pick up the brushes and go at it again and what you laid on the canvas the day before has begun to tack up and holds the new layers of paint differently than the fresh first layers. It’s really so different from acrylic which is fast drying and easy to clean up. Oil is a super tough paint that will last forever with a little help, so I guess I finally fell in love with oils. Over the 40 plus years I have been moving art materials around surfaces, I have worked with just about everything under the sun. The worst was acrylic lacquers on mural vans and trucks ( it stinks) and DuPont Imeron co-polymer Epoxy aircraft paint on planes, the leftovers have to be thrown away because they harden like a rock within an hour, nasty stuff, but very tough. Several of the first murals I painted were in acrylic lacquer automotive paint and will last a thousand years, if they aren’t painted over.
Portraits are the center of my art Universe, since I first took my girlfriends photo from the school annual and drew, then painted, her portrait. Her parents wouldn’t let her see me (smart parents) , so it was my only recourse that forced me into portraits. That first portrait was entered in the county fair and won sweepstakes! Lee Watts, was the very talented local artist who painted the Harding College presidents portraits, and saw my work. Watts sought me out in order to influence me into painting more portraits. He came to see me bringing two of his portraits for study, homemade organic peanut butter and bread. Being from a little town in Arkansas, I was rather awed by his gifts. Watts painted portraits of the Gibson’s, of Gibson’s department stores. He brought the paintings by my house on his way to the airport to place his works in their home. I was 17 years old and I very impressed.
Since then I have worked with all mediums depending on the mood or demands of the time. Being in the mural business has dictated that I learn the best techniques for preparing surfaces in all the many situations where murals are wanted and what types of primers and paints will last the longest. After all is said and done, however, I still love to use a pencil to express my inner artist because of the simplicity and purity of the medium. I will never forget Boris Vallejo saying that any painter worth their salt is good with a pencil first.
The most important innovation in my art since 2000 has been the computer, because of the ability to enhance photographs and paint from them. I have always tended towards blending realism and abstractions in my art. Photography has become such an integral part of my art for the purpose of creating a subject photo or simply recording art for my portfolio. Playing around with photos on the computer has led me to fall in love with the endless variations produced in the creative manipulation process, thus creating my Enhanced photographs. This is one of the hardest areas of my art to present to the public because I consider myself predominately a painter, though the manipulation of the mouse with a practiced drawing hand has it’s advantages. I would like to offer my Enhanced Photos to you, magazines and other artistic purveyors of creative images, So here you will find a selection of never before seen enhanced photos that represent approximately 10 years of my work from 2001 through 2011. I am always happy to photograph any subject and create enhanced photo images as a finished portrait or use them as the basis of a creative painting. As you can see drawing and painting photo-realistic portraits from photography is my main theme, but adding abstractions makes me equally happy. Little faces in and around everything is my trade mark. The painting of ‘Suzanne’ has some 400 or more little faces and I love to create images that use small faces and abstractions as the shading. Probably the greatest change for me has been moving to a very remote, heavily wooded, temperate rain forest and applying my skills to fulfilling the artistic needs of a small rural community, check out our Alsea Arts page. It is just this internet connection that brings us together and I find it a very productive way for us to communicate. If you are interested in any of my work I will sell prints. Please feel free to contact me for information about prints or other images that you my like. I have many more beautiful photos that are waiting to see the light of day! My paintings are for sale and I welcome commissions of all kinds, portraits murals etc.
